Longford’s love story began in 1912

Our Story

The beginning of forever

In 1912, Somerset Playne found love with Lucy in Wellington during his visit to New Zealand. While writing his third encyclopedia in India, Somerset meticulously wrapped an engagement ring around the neck of an Indian doll and mailed it to Lucy. Of course Lucy’s answer was ‘yes’ and four years later, they welcomed their son, Nat. In 1937, Somerset and Lucy purchased the Lake Ōkāreka property, intending it as a home for Nat. This beautiful property became the heart of their family. Today, Nat's wife, Fenella, continues the family's legacy, preserving the romance of their story in this beautiful property, now known as Longfords.

The matriarch of Longfords, Fenella Playne

Fenella, the heart and soul of Longfords, has a lifelong love of sharing. "I love to share," Fenella often says with a warm smile, a sentiment reflected in her dedication to hosting charity events, weddings, and gatherings on the family property. It began with Fenella’s daughters, Lucy and Sarah, whose weddings held on the grounds sparked the beginning of bringing many more families together. A stroll through the gardens tells Fenella's story—there is order, but in keeping with her personality, there’s a wild side too.
